The Wonderful World Of Dr.Seuss

This page is dedicated to Mr. Theodor S. Geisel

Theodor S. Geisel, better Known as Dr. Seuss, was born on March 2, 1904.  He is best known for his children's books full of wonderful creatures and silly words.  During his lifetime he published more than 40 books that have sold over 200 million copies world wide.

Mr. Geisel Died in 1991, but his imaginative worlds populated by Sneetches, Zooks, Wockets, and Loraxses will live on in the minds of children forever.

The idea for " The Cat In The Hat" came about when Mr. Geisel was searching for 2 simple rhyming words to use for a book title.  This book has been translated into more than 20 languages and was the 1st of many books Mr. Geisel Designed to help children learn to read.

The idea for "Horton Hatches The Egg" came about after a breeze scattered some drawingS on Mr. Geisel's Drawing Table.  The wind blew a drawing of an elephant onto a drawing of a tree. When He saw this Mr. Geisel thought -what would an elephant be doing in a tree?

In the early 1970's Mr. Geisel wrote several books under the pen Theo Lesieg, which is Geisel spelled backwards.  Mr. Geisel and his wife, Helen, started the beginner books division of Random House Publishing in 1958.

Mr. Geisels books not only helped children learn to read, they also carried messages about life.  In "Horton Hears A Who"tells about the importance of each individual person.  "The Lorax" teaches the importance of preserving our environment.

Grinch is one of the words invented by Dr. Seuss, so is idiot.    Dr. Seuss would sometimes write more than 20 different versions of a story before the book was completed.  Seuss is the maiden name of Ted Geisel's mother.   Using a scrap paper Dr. Seuss wrote almost all of "The Lorax" in just one afternoon.

While on a ship bound for Europe in 1936, Mr. Geisel was inspired by the sounds from the ship's engines.  The rhythm in the engines helped create the rhymes used in his book "And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street."
